That's a Wrap!

Wow! It felt like just yesterday that I started this semester, now it's already over! This was one of my most favorite classes I've ever taken. Everything we learned has been very useful and I've even had the opportunity to use some of these skills in real life situations already. The course material was easy to follow, the outline of the class was very nicely structured, and Professor Wu was amazing! Each class was packed with information and Wu was always willing to help each student. The time he takes to tend to his students is something I've never seen before; you can tell he really cares deeply about us! I learned so much useful information from this class that I am excited to apply later on in my life.

I finally added my own spunk to my blog too! Using my own background image from a hike I went on with my good buddy, which is also one of my favorite pictures I've taken. I added a profile picture which is me and my best friends at our high school graduation, and changed up my layout and theme colors. I'm really liking the changes I made, it feels a lot more like me.

The class environment felt like such a safe space. Everyone was so friendly, helpful, funny, and kind. Had this not been the case, I don't think I would have done so well during my Ferris Bueller presentation (slides shown below). Mr. Wu said I had one of the strongest voice projections out of the people who presented before me, which was very surprising to me because I'm quite timid. This presentation compared to my last presentation in high school is quite drastic. During my last high school presentation in my English class, my body and voice were shaking, I was having trouble projecting my voice, and I could not look up from my laptop speaker notes -- slightly embarrassing looking back. But all that being said, Mr. Wu definitely creates an environment safe enough for students to break free out of their comfort zone. I would have loved to create an improved slideshow to present, but working seven days a week, some days being from 7am-12am doesn't really allow me to find time to do so haha. But since the semester is over, and I'll have a ton more free time, I might do the slideshow anyway just to see how much I've learned (which I will end up posting here if I end up doing so! So stay tuned if you're interested ^_^).

The skill I chose to talk about from Chapter 6 was 6.4.2 Slide Backgrounds. Before this class I had no idea how many editing options we are provided in regards to the background. Being able to add background images, watermarks, transparency to certain aspects, different colors, and all that jazz definitely comes in handy when needing to create a slideshow -- professional or not. All of the features allow users to unleash their creativity and make a really unique presentation.

Also...DEFINITELY go watch "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" if you haven't. It is kind of a goofy movie, and I know it's not everyone's cup of tea...and Ferris may have been described as "evil" by one of my classmates, Kevin...But the moral of the story is so much deeper than all of the trouble the main characters get in. The takeaway isn't to (spoiler alert) steal your friend's dad's car and wreck it, but it is to stop restraining yourself from living life + embarrassment is a choice + people don't care as much about your faults as you think they do, which is something I wish I knew a little sooner before I had to "grow up". But still, it is never too late to take this advice. I'm unsure where this saying comes from, but I thought I would include it here for you all: "If you fail, congratulations, most people don't even try."

I had a wonderful time taking this class, it has taught me great Microsoft lessons and life lessons. Thank you to everyone for being such amazing, supportive classmates. And thank you Mr. Wu for being the best professor ever!

  1. Hi Avery, your blog honestly looks amazing. The lighting, layout, and even the font choice made everything easy to read. It beats mine by a mile XD.

Also, sorry if I gave you a hard time during your PowerPoint presentation with my questions. I actually liked your presentation a lot. I still stand by the statement that Cameron really needs to choose better friends though. There is a difference between having fun and committing what feels like several crimes in one afternoon. I still do not fully trust Ferris as a person. But I do understand what you meant about the deeper message of not being too afraid of embarrassment or failure. The quote at the end was also nice because sometimes people are so afraid to fail that they never even try in the first place.

  2. Hey Avery, I really enjoyed reading your post! Yes, your new design is truly unique to you and I can see how far you've come from your first post to this post. I find it very interesting that you said you were quite timid and shy during your last high school presentation compared to now and I'm so glad you had that strong confidence due to being comfortable in this classroom environment. By the way, I love Ferris Bueller's Day Off, what a great movie! Also, excellent quote about failure, very motivating. Have a good one and hope you have a successful future!

  3. Hi Avery, I love your text choice for your presentation! I never thought you could do so much with slide backgrounds as well, the thing I learned that would've saved me a lot of time and energy was the ability to apply photos as backgrounds instead of manually fitting it on top of the default background.

  4. Hi Avery, I honestly didn’t realize there were that many options for slide backgrounds either. Being able to use images, transparency, and watermarks really does make presentations look way more professional and creative.

  5. Hi Avery! I really love what you did with your blog. Also, I’m definitely adding Ferris Bueller's Day Off to my watchlist because you spoke so passionately about it. I also had a really good time in this class and enjoyed it a lot, I honestly hope to have more classes like this one in the future.

  6. "If you fail, congratulations, most people don't even try." That's something that I would carry now everyday. Thank you for the movie recommendation, I would add that to the mountain of movies that I wanted to watch since 2020 haha. That said, your blog is actually a good summary of a student in this course. More power to you and your future and maybe next time you'll use a picture of your graduation in college!

  7. Hey Avery, love your blog and I wish I was able to witness your presentation I never heard of "Ferris Bueller". This class was definitely something, it's cool to see you think the same.

  8. This class was a journey! Your blog looks great, it's really nice to see some people decorate their blog to suit their tastes. I'm always extremely nervous when I do presentation but I've done so many in my college career I just deal with the fact I have to do it anyway. My anxiety is never gone but pushing through and trying your best to mask it is how it works for me. We had some presentations about movies in our class, and I always loved to see them mostly because I'm not a movie person so it's fun to learn about.

  9. Hi Avery. Your story about overcoming nervousness during presentations really stood out to me. Public speaking in front of a class takes a lot of courage. I also like the movie, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. However, I never knew about what the lessons were until I read this blog. These are valuable lessons to know.

  11. Hey Avery, I agree with you that Prof. Wu is super nice and helps students feel comfortable with trying new and different things. He never shames anybody for making mistakes but instead pushes them to be better and to their fullest potential. I love that we grew and learned so much in just a few months because of him! Not just academically but also the practical life skills and mindset we can use outside of school.
